Another South African coin donated to charity

Friday, 14th December 2007 (1752 views)

Another gold South African Krugerrand has been mysteriously donated to the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Christmas charity campaign, this time in Everett, Washington.

The one-ounce coin made of 22-carat gold was deposited in a red kettle earlier this week and is thought to be the second valuable gold coin donated to the Shohomish County branch of the charity in the past three years, according to the local Herald newspaper.

A local coin dealer estimated that the coin could sell for around $805 (£395) and Salvation Army workers say if it is not sold locally, it will be brought to a coin dealer, with all profits to benefit the annual charity campaign.

The Salvation Army's business manager for the county, Jerry Gadek, said the gift will boost the local campaign, which is set to provide food boxes for 500 local families and Christmas toys for 1,500 children in the region.

"It blows my mind that someone could just walk up to a kettle like that and make that kind of a donation," he said.

Last month, two gold Krugerrand coins were donated in separate red kettles in Omaha, Nebraska.
