McHenry County Salvation Army receives 25th annual gold coin donationTuesday, 11th December 2007 (1663 views) A gold coin has been donated to the Salvation Army in McHenry County, Illinois for the 25th year in a row, the Northwest Herald has reported. This year's coin, a 2007 American Buffalo gold piece, was discovered in a red kettle outside a Wal-Mart shopping centre on Saturday, which was manned by members of the Algonquin Storm youth baseball team. According to the newspaper, the one-ounce coin has a current market value of around $800 (£390). Salvation Army captain David Werner said the anonymous gold coin tradition is always eagerly anticipated by the charity workers. "No one knows who the donor or donors are and I think that's kind of the suspense that keeps the tradition alive," he said. "Everyone is kind of looking forward to the gold coin," he added, explaining that with donations down about 30 per cent compared with this time last year, the gift was very much appreciated. Last week, Salvation Army workers in Cape Girdardeau, Missouri reported that they had received a gold coin donation for the 11th year in a row.
