Gold coins 'becoming more prominent'Tuesday, 11th December 2007 (2172 views) Gold coins are becoming a popular collectors' item, particularly as the price of the precious metal has soared in recent months, it has been suggested.Members of the Clark County Coin Club recently their organisation's 50th anniversary, with several coin collectors taking time to chat about their hobby with newspaper staff at the Springfield News-Sun in Ohio. In recent years, the coin industry has moved online, with many gold coins now selling in internet auctions, according to coin club president Dan Freyhof. "Also, gold has become more prominent now than it used to be because of the increase in the price of gold," he added. But he said that for most coin collectors in the club, their focus is to share knowledge and information about their hobby, rather than to make an investment. Yesterday, Numismatic News reported that a gold coin from 1931 sold for $126,500 (£61,707) during an auction held at the Money Show of the Southwest in Houston, Texas.
