Gold coins and wedding ring donated to Salvation ArmyMonday, 10th December 2007 (2630 views) A gold wedding ring and three gold coins have made their way into Salvation Army charity kettles in Grundy County Illinois, according to the Herald News. Each of the three quarter-ounce gold coins has an estimated value of $200 (£97), charity workers said, while the ring is currently being auctioned off with a minimum bid of $500. It is thought that the ring, which came wrapped in plastic and came with a note reading "Merry Christmas", would have a value of around $1,200 if it was purchased new. It is the fourth year in a row that bell-ringers have struck gold during the annual campaign. According to charity worker Denise Gaska, executive director of We Care, the gold donations are particularly valuable this year. "They're probably worth more than the year we got seven gold coins because gold is so valuable right now," she told the newspaper. The Grundy County We Care organisation co-ordinates the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Collection and is responsible for utilising the funds in the region throughout the year. Earlier this month, Salvation Army workers found two gold Indian Head coins in donation kettles in Barre, Vermont.
