Rare gold coin donated in VermontThursday, 6th December 2007 (2608 views) A rare gold coin has been deposited in a Salvation Army kettle in Barre, Vermont by an anonymous donor for the second year in a row.Captain Louis Patrick of the community's local Salvation Army chapter said that last year's coin, a 1908 Indian Head gold piece, was sold to a local collector for $2,750 (£1,356). He told the Barre Montpelier Times Argus that this year's gold coin, which is dated 1909, is in better condition that last year's and is worth at least as much money. "If it wasn't for the date you'd think it was the exact same coin," he said, adding that both coins were found wrapped in a $100 bill. Mr Patrick also said that "there is no doubt" that the same generous person donated both gold pieces. The coin is currently being appraised by a local jeweller. Following this evaluation, it will be sold with all proceeds going to support the Salvation Army's year-long community initiatives.
