Spanish police recover stolen gold artefactsWednesday, 5th December 2007 (1599 views) Police in Spain have recovered around 1,800 gold items stolen more than ten years ago from an museum exhibit, according to Russian news source RIA Novisti.A Peruvian man is thought to be responsible for the theft of the items and is currently wanted by authorities in both Peru and Spain, a police spokesperson told the Russian news source. Gold artefacts, including household items and jewellery, were discovered beneath a house in north-west Spain in Santiago de Compostela. The gold items have been returned to the Museum of the Americas in Madrid, where they will remain on display as part of an exhibit on ancient cultures of Latin America before returning back to their continent of origin. According to the Madrid Tourist Guide, the museum houses a large collection of North and South American artefacts obtained through the Spanish colonisation of the Americas. Included in the collection are gold ornaments which originated in Colombia and ancient Mayan parchments estimated to be around 800 years old.
