"Generous" gold coin donation to Salvation ArmyWednesday, 5th December 2007 (2501 views) An anonymous donation of a gold coin to the Salvation Army in Cape Girdardeau, Missouri, has been made for the 11th year in a row, according to the Southeast Missourian newspaper.Wrapped in a $1 bill, the gold coin was discovered in a Salvation Army red kettle located at the entrance to a shopping mall on December 1st. The coin, a quarter-ounce $10 Lady Liberty gold piece, was sold to a local jeweler for $225 (£110), with all proceeds to benefit the charity's Red Kettle Christmas campaign. "Some of the bigger cities, like St. Louis or Chicago, they have a tradition of this for 25 years," said Salvation Army Major Ben Stillwell. "For a community our size, it speaks volumes to the generosity of our community," he added. Anonymous gold coin donations have been a popular topic among Salvation Army workers and volunteers this holiday season. Recently, gold coins have appeared in charity kettles throughout the United States, including donations of one-ounce American Eagle coins and South African Krugerrands.
