Three gold British sovereign coins have been deposited anonymously into a Salvation Army red kettle to support the charity's annual Christmas campaign in Ottumwa, Iowa.

According to the Ottumwa Courier, Salvation Army workers estimate that each coin is valued at more than $120 (£58).

The donation of three gold coins from the UK has been observed in the Iowa town for a number of years, with each coin wrapped in a $100 bill.

According to Salvation Army Captain Jamie Pennington, the discovery of the donation was exciting for the Red Kettle campaign workers.

"The unique thing about this is the anonymity," he said.

"You have people who drop in $1,000 cheques. But their name is on that and we can send them a thank you note."

The gold coin donation is the latest in a string of anonymous gifts of gold to the Salvation Army since the Red Kettle Christmas campaign began last month.

Gold coins have been donated in a number of US cities, including an American Eagle coin in Prescott, Arizona and two South African Krugerrands deposited in charity kettles in Omaha, Nebraska last week.
