A double-stamped $25 American Gold Eagle coin, minted in 2007, has been donated anonymously through the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Christmas charity campaign at a Hy-Vee store in Moline, Illinois, according to Quad-Cities Online.

Officials estimate the coin to be valued at $416.15 (£200.96), which the Salvation Army said could cover the cost of one week's worth of food and shelter for two families, or send five children to overnight camp.

"It creates such excitement as we count the kettles at the end of the day and we are so very grateful to the wonderful donor," said Major Barbara Shiels of the Salvation Army.

Last week, a similar gold coin donation was reported in Fargo, North Dakota, where Salvation Army workers found an uncirculated gold coin valued at more than $800.

The charity's Red Kettle campaign is set to run until Christmas Eve, with all funds raised used to support year-round Salvation Army programmes.
