A gold pen, designed by Montblanc, has been unveiled to honour Prince Rainier III of Monaco.

According to the luxury goods manufacturer, the fountain pen is made of 18-carat white gold and is studded with diamonds and rubies. It is estimated to be worth £200,000.

Some 51 per cent of proceeds from the sale of each pen will benefit the Foundation Princess Grace, which was established by Prince Rainier's wife, American actress Grace Kelly, in 1964.

The foundation supports a variety of cultural and humanitarian tasks in Monaco, including a number of medical charity projects to benefit children, the Princess Grace Irish Library, the Academy of Classical Dance and scholarships for the Rainier III Academy of Music.

Only 81 pens will be released for sale as part of the limited edition collection, representing the prince's age when he died in 2005.

Other special edition writing instruments designed by Montblanc have honoured Hollywood actresses Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich, as well as a number of acclaimed writers, including Virginia Woolf, Voltaire, Agatha Christie, Charles Dickens and F Scott Fitzgerald.
