The newest item in a series of gold coins depicting the wives of former American presidents has been released by the United States Mint.

Sales for the Dolley Madison First Spouse gold coin, which is available in uncirculated and proof form, began on November 19th.

Crafted and designed by the US Mint's Don Everhart, the coin features a portrait of Dolley Madison and is inscribed with the dates 1809-1817, the years she acted as US first lady.

Laura Bush, wife of US president George Bush, spoke at a ceremony unveiling the coin, the Associated Press reported.

"America's first ladies have guided, comforted and sustained our nation in times of trial and triumph," she said.

Other First Spouse coins include Martha Washington, Abigail Adams and a coin depicting the Statue of Liberty, which represents the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, who was not married during his term in the White House.

Designs for further coins in the series to be released next year will include Louisa Adams, Elizabeth Monroe and two more Lady Liberty pieces to signify the presidencies of Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren.
