Town's gold mining history boosts tourismMonday, 19th November 2007 (2743 views) A rich history of gold mining has boosted tourism in a Colorado town, according to 9News.Tourism is booming in Breckenridge, according to the town's Heritage Alliance, with visitor numbers growing about 75 per cent compared with last year's figures. Breckenridge, which is currently preparing to celebrate its 150th anniversary, played an integral role as a settlement during the Pike's Peak gold rush in the mid 19th century. Local gold miners flocked to the town centre in the 1860s, seeking the distraction of a variety of athletic and social activities. "There's so much to be learned from our history," Linda Kay Peterson of the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance told the news channel. She added that an increased interest in heritage tourism on both a local and national level has renewed interest in the town. Today, Breckenridge boasts a number of free museums and walking tours. It is expected to spend millions of dollars to improve its historical sites as part of its upcoming anniversary preparations.
