'Record year' for mining in AlaskaMonday, 12th November 2007 (2452 views) Gold is a main exploration commodity in Alaska, with gold mining largely responsible for an increase in total mining jobs in the US state last year, according to the Houston Chronicle. Some 3,523 mining jobs were generated in the state in 2006, an increase of approximately 700 positions from the year before. The lucrative Pogo gold mine, which recorded its first gold pour in February, has produced 112,000 ounces of the precious metal thus far, which could create a further increase in production-based jobs, the newspaper reported. Meanwhile, construction is underway at the Rock Creek gold mine, which is located near Nome. According to Alaska.com, many people visit the state each year to celebrate its rich history of gold mining by panning for gold in a number of streams along the country's interior and along the beach east of Nome, as well as additional bodies of water in the south-east of the state.
