Recreational prospectors flock to ArizonaFriday, 2nd November 2007 (1920 views) "Snowbird prospectors" come to Arizona to pan for gold in the winter months, a campground manager told the Arizona Republic newspaper. Many campers catch gold fever during their stays at campgrounds and recreational vehicle parks in the state, according to Bob Truppa, host of the Hilltop Campground in Lynx Lake. He added that his recreational gold panning hobby has yielded an estimated 28 ounces of gold in the past 28 years. Panning for gold is a popular activity in the Arizona gold country because it is allowed on all national forest and Bureau of Land Management property land that is no longer open to historical mining claims. "You can find a lot of gold out here, but you have to be lucky," Linda Walton, who manages the campground, told the paper. According to the Arizona Association of Gold Prospectors, the best places for recreational gold panning are located within the state's "golden triangle", which the group's website said is located within driving distance of the cities of Phoenix, Glendale and Tuscon.
