Australian MP Fran Logan has donated a large gold nugget, believed to be worth between A$5,000 and $10,000 (£2,228 and £4,455) to the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame, according to the country's ABC News.

The nugget, reportedly as large as a football, was given by Mr Logan to the museum on October 30 during a visit to the mining city of Kalgoorlie, in south-western Australia.

Discovered at Ramelius Resources' Wattle Dam mine, the nugget represents modern mining history in Western Australia, according to Peter Lilly, a director at the gallery.

He said that the minerals gallery at the mining museum displays the "best collection" of mineral items in the region.

"It's a modern building and it talks about the modern industry and this comes from a modern Western Australian gold mine," he told ABC.

The Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame offers visitors the opportunity to tour an underground mine and pan for gold, according to its website.
