Wednesday, 31st October 2007 (1588 views)

Gold panning is set to be a popular feature of a free family event to be held during an open house at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.

According to the Record newspaper, the university is set to host a two-day gem and mineral show that will include displays on gold from Canada that are on loan from the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.

In addition, a number of gem and mineral dealers and merchants will be onsite with displays of jewellery and natural crystals.

Family-friendly activities at the show include demonstrations at the university's centre for environmental and information technology, as well as soapstone carving, a fossil fish dig and mining for chocolate chips.

Peter Russell, the curator of the museum, said that the child-friendly open house offers something for everyone, the newspaper reported.

"The most anticipated of activities is gold panning, where you will get to keep the gold you find," he said.

The University of Waterloo was founded in 1957 and has produced graduates from 141 countries.
