Gold £5 collector coins available in North AmericaMonday, 17th September 2007 (1822 views) The Royal British Mint has authorised a low mintage of gold £5 coins to be made available to collectors in North America.Only 1,000 brilliant uncirculated gold coins have been authorised for international distribution. According to NumisMaster, the £5 coin was originally authorised for issue between 1817 and 1818, and was intended to succeed the five-guinea piece. It was never intended to circulate widely, but instead was created to represent dignity and royalty under the reign of George III. The coin, which weighs 39.94 grams, features a design of St George slaying a dragon with a short sword on one side, and a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley on the other. According the Royal Mint, coins have been minted in the United Kingdom since the first century AD. Present-day coins are minted at a modern coining plant in south Wales.
