An Elizabeth I gold coin was among the gold items sold at a recent multi-estate sale held at Long Island in New York last weekend.

At the event held by Philip Weiss Auctions, two gold Russian coins were also sold for "princely sums".

One coin - with a face value of ten rubles and dated 1778 - sold for $11,865 (£5,900), while the other dating 1894 and displaying a bust of Alexander III with a crowned eagle sold for in excess of $4,000.

Meanwhile, a £1 British gold coin featuring Elizabeth I from the lifetime collection of Dr Philpot was purchased for $9,887.50.

Elizabeth I of England has been referred to over the years as The Virgin Queen, Gloriana, or Good Queen Bess - she was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor house, reigning for 45 years.

She was the daughter of Henry Tudor and the executed Queen Anne Boleyn.
