Gold thief gets jail timeThursday, 16th August 2007 (2215 views) The man who led an insider gold-stealing gang who stole from a prominent gold mining company has been sentenced to six years in prison and five years of parole.Peter Lloyd Quammen was accused of stealing $1.7 million in gold from Cripple Creek and Victor Mining which was extracted using a homemade version of the mine's gold-recovery system. According to the Associated Press, the men are believed to have taken small amounts of gold from the mining company since around 1999 by diverting gold-saturated fluid from the mine to a homemade recovery filter. The men then sent the gold to California for refining before selling it. "I knew each and every one of them fairly well, and I knew each of them personally, so that was a big blow to me," commented general manager Ron Largent. Mr Largent added that he was happy with the outcome of the trial.
