A gold sword belonging to Ulysses S Grant, a former US president and general during the American Civil War, has sold for over $1.6 million (£0.3 million), it has been revealed.

The Associated Press reports that the historic blade was auctioned by Heritage Auction Galleries of Dallas.

General Grant's sword, which was presented to him in 1864 to honour his promotion to General-in-Chief of all Union forces, was sold to an unnamed bidder for $1.673 million, the news source claims.

"The sword has belonged to the Donald Tharpe Collection of American History since 1989. It remained in Grant's family until the 1960s, when it was acquired by collector Jay Altmeyer," the Associated Press reports.

The gold sword also features silverwork and is monogrammed in diamonds, with battle scenes engraved on the 33-inch blade.

Also being auctioned at a buy-now price of $83,650 is a gold medal belonging to Major General Philip Sheridan which was presented to him by General Grant.
