RCM produces $2bn solid gold coin

Friday, 4th May 2007 (3341 views)

The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) has unveiled the world's first 100kg, 99.999 per cent pure gold bullion coin, which is worth around $2 million (£1 million).

The gold bullion coin, which was originally launched as the Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin in September 1979, is now part of a marketing exercise for the company.

Pure gold coins are extremely rare, making the RCM Gold Maple Leaf coin an important item, as there are no plans to replace the standard 9.999 per cent gold pure gold coin investment products.

"The RCM operates in a very competitive environment, which is especially true of the international gold bullion market," said Ian Bennett, RCM president and chief executive.

He added that the appeal of the coin to collectors and investors was high, thanks to its unique value and design. The reverse of the coin features an "elegant maple leaf" designed by senior engraver Stan Witten, with the front of the coin bearing the head of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Canadian portrait artist Susanna Blunt.
