Gold hallmarking to be introduced in IndiaFriday, 16th February 2007 (3332 views) The gold industry in India is set to undergo something of an overhaul with the news that hallmarking will become mandatory from January 1st next year. This is according to the Madras Jewellers and Diamonds Merchants Association and it will affect all metropolitan cities in the country, aimed at maintaining a uniform standard of gold across India. President of the Madras Jewellers and Diamonds Merchants Association LKS Syed Ahamad, highlighted the size of the operation when he remarked that more than 800 tonnes of gold was being utilised by the jewellery industry in India every year. A workshop was set up last month by Manipal Institute of Jewellery Management in collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to improve quality and raise awareness of hallmark jewellery. Such a measure was introduced following the findings of a survey conducted in India by BIS that discovered 90 per cent of jewellers in 16 cities were not ensuring the purity of their gold.
