Monday, 8th January 2007 (5512 views) In honour of the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, the US Mint has announced that it will introduce two new commemorative coins from next week.A total of 100,000 gold and half a million silver coins will be minted as a result of the anniversary and they will retail either until the end of this year or until they are sold out. The gold coins will host an image of captain John Smith, a Virginia Indian and also the Jamestown Memorial Church as a tribute to the only piece of architecture still remaining from the establishment of Jamestown. Retailing at $255 (£132), the gold coin has a face value of $5. The silver denomination will feature a snapshot of Indian, European and African cultures on one side and images of the ships Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery that were used to bring the first settlers to the area. Edmund Moy, director of the Mint, will travel to Jamestown on January 11th to issue the new coins at a ceremony in Jamestown Settlement's Robins Foundation Theatre.
