Chinese 'Gold Week' boosts Hong Kong jewellery salesMonday, 8th May 2006 (3870 views) Jewellery businesses in Hong Kong enjoyed an overall increase in custom throughout China's 'Golden Week' holiday, as Chinese visitors came in their thousands to splash out and get ready for the traditional wedding season.Hong Kong company Lukfood Holdings International reported that jewellery sales had increased by around ten per cent during Golden Week, one of three week-long annual holidays for China in which considerable travel activity is undertaken. Chinese shoppers are drawn to Hong Kong by the availability of brand goods, fashions and jewellery that can be bought more cheaply than on the mainland. A 'night fair' for the celebrations, held by one of Hong Kong's shopping districts, attracted 100,000 shoppers and generated over $1.2 million of additional trade. Although visitor numbers from China were estimated at over 387,000 from April 29 to May 7, Hong Kong travel companies said that this was a lower number than expected. In past years, there has also been certain opposition to the Golden Week holidays in China, as the increased tourism affects the country's regular economy.
