Pure gold coins are set to surge in popularity in both the US and Canada this year as both countries attempt to boost their current bullion offerings.

The US will introduce a new 24-carat $50 gold coin in 2006, while the Canadian Mint has just introduced new packaging for it famous Gold Maple Leaf coins.

In the US, legislation calls for the .9999 fine Indian Head-Buffalo coin to be distributed by June, but the new mint could be ready before then.

Carrying James Earle Fraser's renowned Indian Head design on the front and the buffalo motif on the reverse, the one-ounce coins could prove a hit with investors.

It is the same design that is used on the five-cent 1913 type one coin – or the Buffalo nickel.

Production of the coins will be unlimited.

But north of the border the Royal Canadian Mint has also given a facelift to the country's Gold Maple Leaf coin – already the bestselling pure gold coin in the world.

The renowned one-ounce coins will now be packaged individually in capsules suspended in cards the size of credit cards. The revamp was needed to tackle concerns that the coins were too easy to damage.
