A book has been published that reviews the entire gold value chain in South Africa, from mining through to trade.

The book, entitled Gold in South Africa, was published on February 2nd in Johannesburg and charts the findings of a research programme carried out by Virtual Metals Research and Consulting's Jessica Cross.

The research was sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry, AngloGold Ashanti, the World Gold Council and the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa.

The book, which is available online, covers the whole gold value chain by looking at refiners and financial institutions, and will act as a reference source for the gold industry.

The social, economic and political framework within which the South African gold operates is examined.

The deputy minister of trade and industry, Dr Rob Davies, said the book contains "a wealth of material which will contribute to the formulation of good policy" in the South African gold industry.

Speaking at the book's launch, AngloGold Ashanti general manager Thero Setiloane expressed a hope that the book could be used to generate "informed debate on issues surrounding the future of the gold sector in South Africa".
