Wednesday, 2nd November 2005 (3972 views) Operations have resumed at the North West mines in Stilfontein by South African company Simmer and Jack Mines. The mines had lain dormant for over seven months as a result of financial difficulties experienced by miners DRDGOLD, but today's announcement marked a new optimism. The company expects that the two mines, Buffelsfontein and Hartebeesfontein, will be able to produce 230,000oz of gold a year up until at least 2015. "Today marks the beginning of a brighter future for the people of Stilfontein," commented Simmers chairman Roger Kebble. "I am confident that we can turn these operations around and create something to be proud of, namely a solid operation producing 230,000 ounces of gold per annum for at least the next ten years." It is expected that once fully operational the mines will employ 3,800 people.
