Emirates Gold, a specialist in coins and gifts, has announced plans to increase its gold production.

The company, the largest gold refiner in the region, has said it will move from producing 600 kilograms a day to 1,000. The changes are to be put in place by next July.

Emirates, based in Dubai, will also increase its silver production.

Known as the city of gold, Dubai's overall gold output could soar in the coming months as other refiners based in the city have also announced plans to increase production and build more plants.

This year Dubai's gold output is forecasted at 400 tonnes for the year, but by 2006 that could rise to 500 tonnes.
