Gold crown auctioned for earthquake sufferersWednesday, 19th October 2005 (2450 views) Pakistan's Islahuddin Siddiqui has put his gold crown up for auction and intends to donate the proceeds to the victims of the South-Asian earthquake, reports Pakistan's Daily Times.The former Pakistan hockey captain received the gold crown after his team won the World Cup in 1978 at Buenos Aires, Argentina. His gold crown will be auctioned off to the highest bidder when the bidding takes place through Dubai's ERY television channel. Mr Siddiqui last week launched a campaign to raise money for the victims of the earthquake. He was joined by fellow sporting legends including former cricket captains Javed Miandad, Saeed Anwar, Moin Khan and hockey Olympiads Hasan Sardar and Samiullah Khan. The Pakistani government is currently calling for medical assistance and has warned of a shortage of tents. On Monday the death toll from the earthquake stood at 40,000 with 65,000 injured.
