Indian banks cash in on gold coins

Friday, 14th October 2005 (3241 views)

The Indian Corporation Bank, HDFC Bank and IndusInd Bank are poised to join the number of banks offering gold coins, reports the Economic Times.

ICICI Bank and MMTC already offer gold coins for sale and these can also be purchased from more traditional retailers.

Nevertheless, the banks offer customers the security of assaying certificates and hallmarking, which are often missing from gold purchased through other outlets.

Corporation Bank's coins will be embossed with the face of the goddess Lakshmi and weigh eight grams each.

IndusInd Bank's coins weigh in at between five and ten grams and are likewise made out of 99.9 per cent pure gold, while HDFC Bank will be selling bars rather than coins.

Ahead of the festival season, gold coins have been enjoying a spate of popularity, with a two gram gold coin reportedly selling for around Rs 1,500.
