Newmont to prospect Te ArohaMonday, 3rd October 2005 (2442 views) The world's largest producer of gold has been given an exploration permit near Te Aroha in the Waikato.Crown Materials has given Newmont Mining a permit for an area of 9,585 hecatres, which is approximately 15 kilometres long and lies on the eastern outskirts of Te Aroha. The permit work programme at Te Aroha necessitates a minimum of 2,000 metres of reconnaissance drilling within a three-year period. Newmont already operates the openpit Martha mine at Waihi , and is currently developing the nearby underground Favona mine. It has now acquired ten gold and silver exploration permits in the epithermal southern Coromandel area. The permit will be held in the name of Newmont subsidiary Waihi Gold Company.
