Sunnis and Shias unite to donate gold jewelleryThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Wednesday, 7th September 2005 (6778 views) Thousands of Sunnis and Shias have united to donate items such as gold jewellery, money and even kidneys after a stampede in Baghdad. The stampede occurred a week ago after rumours of a suicide bomber when Shia worshippers were crossing the al-Aima bridge in Baghdad on their way to prayer. Several appeal centres were set up to deal with the tragedy and many people have come forward to donate their possessions. Mr Alkhalidi told the Times: "So many women have donated their jewellery that we have literally kilos of gold. Some men have offered to donate their kidneys to the injured." Gold is frequently used as an investment, not only in the form of gold bars and coins but also as jewellery. Jewellery is particularly versatile as it can be used to ornament the body, is always close at hand and can be melted down into bullion when necessary. Its investment value is one reason why many couples are presented with gold jewellery at their wedding.
