New jobs at Prominent HillThursday, 25th August 2005 (3107 views) Oxiana will create up to 400 new full-time jobs by 2008 at its soon to be developed gold and copper mine at Prominent Hill, south Australia. The gold mining company is aiming to employ local workers as it has a native-title agreement, which commits it to providing jobs for Aboriginal locals. "We'll have a training program for the operators and the skilled positions and we'll also involve the Aboriginal community in all of that - people from Coober Pedy and nearby, primarily from South Australia," explained Owen Hegarty, Oxiana's managing director. Mining estimates stand at 110,000 to 130,000 ounces of gold a year and 90,000 to 1000,000 of copper. Oxiana expects the mine and surrounding infrastructure to cost a revised amount of AU$530 million to build. This is a dramatic rise on last year's initial top estimate of AU$350 million and will consist of AU$272 million alone for on and offsite infrastructure. Construction will start on the open-pit mine next year and a few hundred will be directly employed in this.
