China is set to house a new recycling centre that will focus exclusively on salvaging precious metals such as gold from electronic goods.

Based in Tianjin in the north of the country, the facility will be able to handle up to 30,000 tonnes of discarded electronic devices, or "e-waste" each year.

Gold and other precious metals such as pgms will be recovered from phones, computers and circuit boards, while other metals such as zinc and iron will also be targeted.

The site will be built next month and will come into operation next year.

Gold is used in a variety of electronic devices as its resistance to surface oxidation and corrosion and its high thermal and electrical conductivity make it ideal.

The most frequent uses of gold in electronics include making plating on contacts and conductors, gold bonding wires in semiconductor devices and gold based solder alloys.
