Friday, 12th August 2005 (3981 views) Gold mine strikes in South Africa have ended amicably in under a week after the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Solidarity accepted a pay rise.

The gold miners have accepted the offer of a six to seven per cent pay rise from AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields, Harmony Gold and the South Deep joint venture after negotiations conducted by the Chamber of Mines.

Bobby Godsell, the chief executive officer at Anglogold Ashanti, the world's second biggest gold producer, announced the company's relief at the agreement.

"Strikes are by their nature unpleasant and costly. However it is pleasing that the strike was resolved reasonably quickly and was conducted in an orderly manner," he commented.

Mr Godsell went on to indicate the improvement in mine relations as the strike was solved within five days compared to the three weeks of the last strike in 1987.

It is hoped that the gold mines can continue normal production as soon as possible and that the lost productivity can be rectified.

© Adfero Ltd
