Under the deal Xstrata will provide equipment for operations that is expected to improve gold recovery by around 20,000 ounces per year. John Kazakoff, Kumtor senior vice president of operations, commented: "Xstrata's IsaMill technology offers the advantages of high power efficiency, proven robust operations and large scale. "The small footprint is also important for a site like Kumtor which is located at 4,000 metres above sea level in the remote Tian Shan Mountains." This technology was picked following personal inspections by Mr Kazakoff of fine grinding installations "throughout the world". Xstrata Technology is a wholly owned subsidiary of Xstrata, a major global diversified mining group, listed on the London and Swiss stock exchanges and with headquarters in Switzerland.
