Jewellery sector benefits from China's Golden WeekMonday, 9th May 2005 (2554 views) China's tourism industry reportedly boomed over the May Day holiday weekend, or the golden week, this year, generating almost $6 billion.Official statistics showed that tourist sites across the country attracted 120 million people, while others chose to shop over the holiday period. Jewellery was one of the most popular commodities for the May Day holiday, along with household appliances, automobiles and clothes, China Daily reports. Shao Weiqi, the Chinese minister of tourism, said: "Not only in China, but also some foreign travel agencies were catching this golden opportunity to promote new sites and services to attract more visitors to China." Over the golden week this year, China's less developed western region surpassed that of the eastern coastal area in tourism for the first time. The Chinese jewellery market is becoming increasingly popular with both foreign consumers and nationals.
