Gold is being promoted in Australia this week as part of the Australian Gold Council's Gold Week.<br/><br/>The event is being run to draw attention to the precious metal and bring a boost to the industry.<br/><br/>Tamara Gorrie, from the council, told ABC News Online: "From exploration, gold production through to investment, its contribution in regional Australia and also jewellery manufacturing and marketing, it's [used in] quite a wide range of activities around Australia."<br/><br/>A number of events will be held across Australia to celebrate gold, as well as a special industry dinner.<br/><br/>According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics the export of gold is worth nearly $5.5 billion in Western Australia last year.<br/><br/>Australia has hundreds of gold mines, prospects and tenements, particularly in the Goldfields and its largest gold mine the Superpit.<img alt="track" src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=8242810"/>
