Australia celebrates goldMonday, 11th April 2005 (2688 views) Gold is being promoted in Australia this week as part of the Australian Gold Council's Gold Week.The event is being run to draw attention to the precious metal and bring a boost to the industry. Tamara Gorrie, from the council, told ABC News Online: "From exploration, gold production through to investment, its contribution in regional Australia and also jewellery manufacturing and marketing, it's [used in] quite a wide range of activities around Australia." A number of events will be held across Australia to celebrate gold, as well as a special industry dinner. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics the export of gold is worth nearly $5.5 billion in Western Australia last year. Australia has hundreds of gold mines, prospects and tenements, particularly in the Goldfields and its largest gold mine the Superpit.
