Gold mine offers hope in BotswanaTuesday, 15th February 2005 (2663 views) The commissioning of a gold mine in Botswana has been described by African president Festus Mogae as a key indicator of scope for diversity in the mineral sector.Speaking at the launch of the Mupane Gold Project, he explained that there were increased opportunities and the chance to create a more prosperous and productive society. The project is situated around 40 kilometres east of Francistown and is set to create new jobs for the area and boost the gold mining sector, according to BOPA. "It is also my understanding that this mine, with its processing plant and infrastructure, will have the capacity to produce and process some 3,100 kilograms or over 100,000 ounces of gold a year," he said. Mr Mogae has also encouraged mine employees to take advantage of opportunities that may arise as a result of the project. In addition, he welcomed the efforts of Gallery Gold in ensuring at least 95 per cent of local recruitment and training for people in Mupane.
