Jewellery companies are already lining up for the lucrative contract to design and make the rings for the winners of the Super Bowl, to be played on February 6th.

Many companies making them are willing to manufacture the rings at a loss, solely for the publicity and future financial benefits.

There are specific criteria for the manufacturing of the rings. They must be made of ten carat plumb gold and weigh no more than 30 pennyweight.

The NFL will buy 150 rings, paying a base price of $5,000 (£2650) per ring, giving a total of $750,000 (£401,000).

American footballers' fingers are wider than average, so the rings use a great deal more precious metal than usual.

Just 6,000 Super Bowl winners' rings have been made, giving the pieces a huge collectors' value.
