Coins go on sale

Friday, 14th January 2005 (2681 views)

A collection of rare gold coins from ancient Rome and Greece has just been put on pre-auction display.

The collection has been in a bank vault in Baltimore, Maryland, for nearly fifty years.

The ancient coins have a value of more than $5 million (£2.68 million), according to the auction organisers.

The most valuable coin depicts Pedro I, the first emperor of Brazil, and is valued at $100,000 (£56,000).

John Eliasberg, the son of the collector Louis E. Eliasberg Sr., a renowned Baltimore banker, recently decided to put the coins up for sale.

The auction will be held in New York on April 19th and 20th.
