Tuesday, 9th November 2004 (3686 views) AngloGold Ashanti has claimed that the most exciting area for gold exploration in Africa is the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to the mining firm, South Africa now has little new opportunities to offer, but in the Congo there was a good chance of discovering a good size deposit.

Richard Duffy, responsible for identifying new opportunities for AngloGold, told Reuters: "In Africa, the most prospective area probably is the Congo. The important thing is to get in there early...but it's far too early to say whether we will build a mine."

The second biggest gold producer in the world has already established an exploration area in the Congo's northeast Ituri region and is hoping to bring in a drilling rig.

"Hopefully having identified it as an interesting area we will be able to announce something in due course," Mr Duffy added.

The company is also focusing on gold efforts in Columbia, Peru, China, Russia, Alaska, the Philippines and Mongolia.
