Kansanshi Mine offers golden profit opportunityTuesday, 9th November 2004 (2640 views) Africa's Kansanshi Mine is set to produce 50,000 ounces of gold, according to the Times of Zambia.The mine was rated as one of the top 10 new copper mines but is set to raise around $20 million from its gold production. In addition, in order to help reduce costs, there are plans to use existing facilities rather than invest in a smelter and other items at the mine. Mine manager, Jeremy Allen, explained that production is to start on November 14, although some mining and stock piling had already begun. The mine has a life span of around 45 years, although this could be extended and it will be developed in phases with the first seeing a 16 year interval. Kansanshi is the first open pit mine in the last 40 years to be opened in Zambia.
