Harmony secures first stage mining rights

Tuesday, 26th October 2004 (2952 views)

Harmony Gold Mining has announced that it has received its first approvals for the conversion of its Evander and Randfontein operations from old order to new order mines.

The application for the new mining rights was first submitted in May this year and covers all operating shafts and projects in both operations.

Bernard Swanepoel, chief executive, commented: "It has been a long and rigorous process leading to the granting of Harmony's first licences. It has required a lot of hard work and months of consulting with the Department of Minerals and Energy and other stakeholders at a regional and national level.

"The process also required a high level of detail and accuracy the social aspects of which are to be taken very seriously but we are extremely pleased with the outcome."

The licensing programme has been worked on for the last 18 months and the company has tried to secure rights using a region-by-region approach.

Mr Swanepoel hopes the granting of licenses will help address concerns of local and international investors on the security of mining rights held by the company.
