Gold mining firm sets up training facilityThursday, 7th October 2004 (2484 views) Canadian firm Placer Dome has revealed it has completed a pilot project to set up a mining schoolhouse at its Campbell mine site to train new miners. The gold mining giant decided to press ahead with plans to develop a training site after a mining boom in Northern Ontario was put on hold due to a lack of skilled miners. Brian Larson, the community liaison officer for Placer Dome told Northern Ontario Business: "We're in the middle of the third Gold Rush." The pilot project was set up in July and the company is now ready to expand the programme and increase the number of students it can admit for the future. Support for the training comes from government partners and students are offered common-core training on site at a real gold mine. Young people can also learn specialist skills and how to use equipment, as well as maintenance.
