AngloGold Ashanti to begin gold exploration in DRC

Thursday, 23rd September 2004 (2535 views)

AngloGold Ashanti has revealed it will start to explore for gold in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) this year.

The world's second biggest gold producer has claimed the move follows the government's attempts to recover from a civil war.

AngloGold's president, Sam Jonah, told Business Report: "This is no sleeper for us. By the end of the year we will be starting our exploration activity there."

According to a spokesman the company will be spending a total of $33.4 million looking for new gold mines overall this year.

The government for the area and the UN peacekeeping mission have both approved the exploration.

AngloGold acquired prospects in north eastern DRC when it merged with Ashanti Goldfields to become AngloGold Ashanti.
