Gold firm creates harmony among unionsMonday, 19th July 2004 (3027 views) A dispute over several gold mining shafts being closed has been settled this week by Harmony Gold Mining.According to Business Report, plans by the South African company had caused disagreement with unions concerning workers. However the company has reassured unions that no workers will be fired under the new plans. Unions have now agreed to let the company move workers from some of the shafts it wished to close and workers will be encouraged to take voluntary retrenchment packages. Ferdi Dippenaar, Harmony's marketing director explained: "We reached an agreement with the unions, which was signed on Friday. It creates an opportunity where more labour can be hired." Shaft closures were decided on following the rand's gains against the dollar cutting profits, with reviews now taking place to determine additional closures.
