Monday, 19th July 2004 (4481 views) A dispute over several gold mining shafts being closed has been settled this week by Harmony Gold Mining.<BR/><BR/>According to Business Report, plans by the South African company had caused disagreement with unions concerning workers.<BR/><BR/>However the company has reassured unions that no workers will be fired under the new plans.<BR/><BR/>Unions have now agreed to let the company move workers from some of the shafts it wished to close and workers will be encouraged to take voluntary retrenchment packages.<BR/><BR/>Ferdi Dippenaar, Harmony's marketing director explained: "We reached an agreement with the unions, which was signed on Friday. It creates an opportunity where more labour can be hired." <BR/><BR/>Shaft closures were decided on following the rand's gains against the dollar cutting profits, with reviews now taking place to determine additional closures.<img src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=3060419"/>
