MinMet mine sees production dip

Monday, 5th July 2004 (2694 views)

International mining and exploration group MinMet has reported that production at its wholly owned Bjorkdal gold mine in Northern Sweden fell during the first six months of this year.

MinMet stated that, during the six-month period ending June 30th 2004, gold production totalled 13,865 ozs Au, 4,255 ozs lower than the same period in 2003.

MinMet management completed the acquisition of a crushing plant for SEK12 million in April and has been working towards finalising a new mining contract in conjunction with plans to extend the mine by targeting richer in-pit ore from the South Wall, South East Extension and North Wall targets. In the meantime the majority of production has been from processing lower grade material from stockpiles.

Targeting and processing of in-pit ore in the South East pit bottom was delayed due to weather conditions and excessive water, brought on by an extended winter. With the advent of summer, mining of ore from the South East pit commenced in late June, and will now contribute to third quarter results.

David Hall, MinMet Group Operations Director said: "We now have an extensive mine plan in place and are confident that following our recent estimated 31 per cent increase in contained gold resource, announced on 6 May 2004, we have a significant ore body at Bjorkdal."
